July meeting by Paul Cornell At the July meeting we discussed buying a wet saw for the club for members to cut specimens for $300.00. After a short discussion it was agreed to buy the saw providing it worked well. Mike Whitton was going to look at the saw and if it was in good working order he was going to purchase it. A field trip to Gore MT was also discussed. We can go back to the top pit that we went to a few years ago any day of the week until Labor Day then only weekends until Columbus Day. We will be charged a dollar per pound. No one seemed to want to pay. So it is on hold for now Also the trip to the Benson Mine was postponed because no one contacted Mike Whitton to say they were going. Up Coming Events Program for August 16th will be a show and tell about any specimens from the Springfield show. Or /and Mark Kilmer's presentation that was postponed from an earlier date. September 16 and 17th Club picnic on the 16th at Cyrstal Grove with a swap on the 17th September 20 - Special Meeting on where the club is going or should we try to do a show again or not and how to raise money otherwise. After the meeting we went upstairs and saw a DVD on Rhodochrostie that was brought in by Bob Royer
Carl Phillips By Carolyn Weinberger, EFMLS Editor Carl Phillips passed away on July 28 at the nursing facility where he lived. He had been in fragile health for some time. He fell about two weeks ago, spent a few days in the hospital where he seemed to be getting stronger. Shortly after being returned to the nursing home where he lived his condition worsened and he passed away. Carl was exceedingly active in EFMLS activities for many, many years. Steve and I first me Carl in 1980 during an EFMLS Convention in Charleston WV hosted by the Kanawha Rock & Gem Club. Carl served as Convention/Show chair and did such a terrific job that his club volunteered to host two additional conventions (1983 and 1985 - the combined EFMLS/AFMS one). Carl served as chair for these too. He also served as a member of the Federation Bylaws and Operating Procedures Committee. It was primarily Carl who took on the task of revising and updating the Federation Bylaws in 1993 - a herculean endeavor. At the time of his death he still served as a member of the committee. We also renewed our friendship at many EFMLS Wildacres Workshops where Carl took an active leadership role. He served as Director and/ or chair of the Functioning Committee there for many years and took the lead in establishing many of the policies still in use at the workshops today. In recognition of his numerous contributions Carl was awarded the EFMLS Citation Award in 1993 and the Wildacres Appreciation Award in 2003. Carl and his late wife Jeanette moved to Florida several years ago, but he managed to keep in touch with his friends via e-mail and telephone. He suffered the first of several strokes several years ago and for the past few years used an "electric chair" to get around. He continued to live independently and drive until about 18 months ago when he fell and broke his pelvis. Shortly thereafter he moved to Ohio to be nearer his son. Carl had a wonderful sense of humor. Fun night at Wildacres always brought out the best (or worst?) in Carl. For those who've been there, Peety the snake was Carl's story! After the advent of E-mail, Carl reveled in sending stories to his friends - his way of keeping in touch. The Federation has lost a tireless worker and many of us have lost a good friend. Contributions in Carl's memory should be made to the AFMS Scholarship Foundation (checks to AFMS) %Bob Livingston Cards may be directed to his son: Vincent Phillips PICNIC By Elaine Royer There will be a swap and picnic at Crystal Grove September 16 beginning at 10. Around 4 the picnic will begin. Those attending should bring their own meat and beverage and a dish to share. The club has place settings for all and the Myers have a grill. Those that are camping can dig on Sunday. Hope to see you all there. |
